by Sean A. Watkins, OurVoices
If we take a hard look at our current climate crisis, mindfully experiencing the feelings that arise, it is clear our Earth is a gift which we are charged with being its stewards. This crisis represents a significant point in time to “bend the course of history”—this is the message Buddhist nun and climate warrior, Ven. Santussika Bhikkhuni, believes will unite individuals and spiritual communities around the world.
Ayya Santussika was a key organiser for The People’s Climate March and The People’s Climate Train as director of Buddhist Global Relief.
Santussika’s journey is clear: she is on a continuous search for deeper meaning and ways to be of service. In the face of our climate crisis, this has led to deeper understanding in the devastating effects climate change has on our people—cataclysmic storms, droughts, floods, wildfires, and sea-level rise taking lives, destroying homes, impacting food security, and reducing access to fresh food and water.
Ven. Santussika’s leadership has influenced many around the world to see the spiritual and moral reasons to act on climate. Her gift to the world has been her climate activism rooted in the Dharma—quiet dignity, a depth of calm, mindfulness, and compassion.
For last year’s People’s Climate March, she led a four-day trip on the People’s Climate Train across the U.S. with 170 other people, hosting morning and afternoon workshops that allowed everyone to learn from each other and develop fruitful relationships. Certainly, those who walked away from the trip left feeling a new sense of calm while standing to lose everything we love on Earth.
As we look forward to the road ahead of us this year, we share words from Ven. Santussika Bhikkhuni to uplift our souls:
“We need to set a new course for our society towards wholesome, sustainable, and compassionate living….We need to come together in massive numbers to exert enough influence to make the systemic changes that are needed….The systems themselves must be changed.” (Source)Santussika’s leadership on climate activism is much needed and OurVoices is excited to have her join our movement as a Spiritual Ambassador.
