by Sean A. Watkins, OurVoices
As former Moderator of the United Church of Canada, the largest Protestant denomination in Canada, The Very Reverend Dr. William "Bill" Phipps is one of the country's most influential spiritual leaders. A retired minister, theologian, and lawyer, Phipps’ career is an example of strong commitment to environmental justice, eradicating poverty, and grassroots organising.
In the fight for climate justice, Bill is bridging faith communities together for a "greener, healthier, more resilient Canada."
When Bill was Moderator, he initiated the “Moderator's Consultation of Faith and the Economy," from which he later co-founded his organisation Faith & the Common Good. This network of people of faith, hope, and spirit who, despite differences in theology, dress and culture, share a calling to protect our ecosystem.
For Bill, climate change forces us to spiritually reflect on how we vote and what we demand from our political leaders. As he says, “We need the best in human truth telling, planning, and actions.” With the world looking forward to the meeting of global leaders in Paris to address climate change this December, Bill's point is more important than ever.
We must raise our voices to commit leaders to make the strongest climate agreement to protect humanity.
OurVoices is incredibly happy to have Bill join us as a Spiritual Ambassador, uniting people around the world of all faiths for climate justice.
The time to take action on climate change is now.
